International Day of Charity: Celebrating the Heart of Our Community

Every year on 5 September, International Day of Charity provides an opportunity to recognise the power of kindness, generosity and community spirit. At Elmbridge Community Link (ECL), it’s also a chance to celebrate the people who make our local community such a supportive and welcoming place to live.

Whether it’s a volunteer giving their time, a local business supporting a community initiative, or neighbours looking out for one another, acts of charity happen every day across Elmbridge. Together, these contributions help create stronger connections, reduce isolation and improve the wellbeing of people throughout our borough.

Small Acts, Big Impact

Charity is often thought of as fundraising or donations, but it can be much more than that. Offering a listening ear, helping someone attend an appointment, sharing skills, volunteering at a local event, or simply checking in on a neighbour can make a real difference.

At ECL, we see the impact of these everyday acts of kindness first-hand. Our work is built on bringing people together, supporting our learning-disabled and autistic community to stay connected, and enhancing people’s lives with activities which build confidence, skills and friendship.

International Day of Charity is the perfect opportunity to thank the volunteers, community groups, partners and supporters who contribute so much to local life. Their dedication helps us build a more connected community where people feel valued, included and supported. Whether they are volunteering their time, sharing expertise, supporting events or championing local causes, their commitment enables us to reach more people and strengthen community wellbeing across Elmbridge.

Building a More Connected Elmbridge

At the heart of ECL is a simple belief: communities are strongest when people support one another.

Through our weekly programme of activities, we work to create opportunities for residents of all ages to connect, participate and flourish. From Arts & Crafts sessions for our learning disabled members, to AllSports for our team of autistic young adults, ECL’s volunteer led activities provide a much-needed service, not only for the participants but also for their carers in the form of regular respite. By bringing people together, we can help tackle loneliness, encourage inclusion and build lasting relationships that enrich lives.

International Day of Charity reminds us that positive change begins with people. Every act of kindness, no matter how small, contributes to a more caring and resilient community.
