Volunteers’ Week is a time to recognise and celebrate the incredible people who give their time to support others in our community. At ECL Walton, our volunteers bring warmth, creativity, and compassion - qualities that make a real difference every day.

One of our wonderful volunteers, Claire, who supports a weekly art class, beautifully captures what volunteering means to her:

“One of the loveliest things I’ve learned from working with people with learning disabilities is that beyond their cognitive, communicative, and physical limitations, is a person with needs, wants, and a sense of humor just like me. They remind me that we are more alike than we are different.”

Through shared activities like art, relationships grow and personalities shine. Each session is filled with laughter, discovery, and individuality:

“I volunteer with a weekly art class and always have fun as I get to know their personalities, passions, preferences, and joys. One person loves to sing, another loves to dance. One of them loves Elvis and eating ice-cream, another has an astonishing knowledge of cathedrals around the world. Some are experts on the habits of animals or superheroes, and another loves to share her excitement about the contents of her lunchbox.”

For many volunteers, their motivation comes from both empathy and a desire to give back:

“Sometimes I think, what if one of my kids had been born with a learning disability, how would my life be different. And that is partly why I volunteer, because I feel compassion for their families. Besides, as a retired Dietitian, I enjoy helping others. I think it’s important to share our time and resources in the community, as there are so many people who need a little help.”

This Volunteers’ Week, we celebrate stories like this - stories of kindness, understanding, and human connection. Our volunteers remind us that small acts of time and care can have a big impact.

If you’re inspired to make a difference, we’d love to hear from you, so please get in touch with Pier at coordinator@eclwalton.org.uk
